As I mentioned before, I not only have autism, but also generalized anxiety disorder. I struggled with this for a very long time.
Living with an anxiety disorder is not easy. In the beginning, you might think that you are simply stressed and that is why you worry so much. But eventually, even the smallest challenges can start to feel impossible. It got to the point where I was no longer able to do the simplest tasks, such as going grocery shopping or going out to do something fun.
Panic Attacks
I even started having panic attacks. During these attacks, it felt as though my body was turning itself inside out. I would also become extremely nauseous and sometimes had to throw up.
I even had panic attacks because I was afraid that I had said something wrong. Or because I had to leave the house to go to work. This also gave me a very negative self-image, which eventually developed into depression. I’m worthless anyway, so why should I keep going? Or: The only person who would miss me is my mother. These were thoughts that often went through my head.
Reactions from the People Around You
For people who have never experienced an anxiety disorder, it can also be difficult to understand what you are feeling. You often hear things like: “Stop making such a big deal out of it,” “It’s really not that bad,” “Don’t worry so much,” or “Don’t be so dramatic.”
When you are already struggling with anxiety, hearing these things can make you feel even more rejected and alone. That is why it is important to be patient with someone who is struggling and to validate their feelings. Their feelings are real, even though the reasoning behind their fears may not be realistic.
A Personal Ending
Thankfully, I eventually decided to start taking medication, even though I found that incredibly scary as well. But it helped me calm down again. It created some space in my head, allowing me to process my fears. Slowly, I was able to teach my brain that my fears were not real.
Because of this, I now have my anxiety disorder under control. And I feel strong again. Even when difficult situations come my way, I now feel strong enough to face them.
Are you currently in the depths of your anxiety? Know that better times are ahead. Seek help and give yourself time. Things really will get better.
Have you struggled with anxiety and managed to overcome it? What was your experience like? And what helped you get it under control?
I would love to hear about your experiences.
Lots of love,
Marissa
